How Rachel Howell got involved with U.S. Geological Survey
My physics teacher provided some information regarding open positions for students with USGS. I applied, by her recommendation, and obtained a job with the water science center.
I will definitely never forget my first trip to our warehouse my first day working here. The rooms we occupy were stuffed full of boxes, and everything was covered in a thick layer of dust and dead bugs. As my job would be archiving these records, the experience was an intimidating one, to say the least.
Rachel Howell's accomplishments
Over the summer, I was able to send off a great number of boxes full of old records to the records center in Colorado. Not only did I feel proud of my work, my supervisor was happy for an emptier warehouse! On a personal level, I feel accomplished for having a government position as my first job.
Rachel Howell's next steps
After this year, I am planning on majoring in a field of biology at the University of New Mexico. I hope to continue working here at the water science center for as long as possible.
