Environmental Education Intern, Colorado State Office, Lakewood, Colorado
Bureau of Land Management
How Kyle Sullivan got involved with Bureau of Land Management
I was working for the Weld County Youth Conservation Corps as an Environmental Education Coordinator when I heard about the possibility of an internship with the Bureau of Land Management doing Environmental Education. The internship was part of an innovative program sponsored through the Colorado Youth Corps Association called Corps to Career, which provides work experience beyond the Youth Corps. After sending out my resume, I was selected for the internship.
I created a curriculum for the General Land Office 200th anniversary commemoration. I showed my work to the State Director, Helen Hankins, who then set up a meeting with BLM’s National Director, Bob Abbey. After showing my work to Abbey, he invited me to Washington DC to share with the National Leadership Team. View the curriculum here: http://prezi.com/uhujs4jxi4pn/gloing-about-history/
Kyle Sullivan's accomplishments
As an intern, my main goal was to develop an assessment of BLM Colorado’s Environmental Education program. The assessment outlined what BLM was doing for EE in Colorado, what constraints education programs were facing and my recommendations for the program. I created a lesson plan for the 200th anniversary of the General Land Office, which will be used in conjunction with an art contest for Colorado High School students. I recreated BLM Colorado’s environmental education webpage and turned it into a web portal with learning opportunities for all ages. During my internship, I was nominated to be one of Colorado Youth Corps Association’s Corps Member of the Year. Since I was working out of the Office of Communications, I also learned a lot about Public Affairs.
Kyle Sullivan's next steps
I would love to pursue full time employment with the BLM as an Environmental Education Coordinator. I am considering getting a Master’s Degree in Natural Resources, Hydrology, or non-profit administration. I also found out about a lot of beautiful public land that I need to explore!
