How Kaitlyn Bednar got involved with U.S. Geological Survey
I first heard about the Student Temporary Employment Program through my high school chemistry teacher in 2008. She had a flyer posted in her room about a summer internship with the U.S. Geological Survey. This opportunity sounded too good to be true. I applied, and to my surprise I was offered the internship. Still to this day, I am grateful for the opportunity I was given years ago and look forward to continuing my career with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Over the course of my job I have had many memorable experiences. However, I will never forget the summer of 2010 when I had the opportunity to collect ground water samples. The field crew and I were located along the west coast all the way up from Sacramento to Crescent City and back collecting samples. I have lived in California my whole life and never have I seen as much of it as I did when collecting samples. There is nothing better than being pushed out of the “usual” and into an unfamiliar place that is filled with natural beauty, talking to people I would never have met, and doing the job I continue to love that always has had some unexpected twist waiting for me to solve.
Kaitlyn Bednar's accomplishments
While working with the U.S. Geological Survey I have helped out with numerous projects that have included a variety of field studies with groundwater, surface water, soils, and some biology. When I am not out in the field collecting samples I enjoy working in the lab processing and analyzing all kinds of samples. If there is something that I don’t know how to do, I definitely enjoy learning how to do it. I think it is important to have a general knowledge and some experience of how samples are both collected and processed. With my experience in both, I have gained an understanding for the data that has allowed me to accurately measure and enter data values into our database so that they can be used to improve our environment.
Kaitlyn Bednar's next steps
While earning my B.S. in Geology I plan to continue working with the U.S. Geological Survey and get out in the field as much as possible traveling throughout California and wherever else the U.S. Geological Survey takes me in order to fully gain an understanding of the geological issues we are going to face in the near future. After obtaining my first set of degrees and certificates I plan to continue working with the U.S. Geological Survey while going to graduate school to earn my master's degree. After that I would like to say I will still be working with the U.S. Geological Survey doing what I love.
